malcolm palmer
Malcolm attended his very first George Formby Meeting held at the Victoria Hotel,
Wolverhampton in 1973.
Before Malcolm started the GF Stourbridge Branch in 1991 he attended the meetings that
were held in the 1970s, once a week, at Old Hill Conservative Club (named The Warley
Branch). This was organised by Ernest Montgomery (Monty) who at that time was President
of the George Formby Society. This Branch came to an end in the early 1980s.
During the third Annual Meeting of the GF Society at The Stourbridge Institute in October
1991 (organised by Bob Drinkwater), it was discussed about holdings local monthly
meetings. It was here Malcolm decided to start up the GF Stourbridge Branch in December
1991 and it is still thriving today - celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Branch on
Tuesday 21st December 2021.
Malcolm has always promoted George Formby wherever he ventured. He was a member of
the Amateur Radio Society, The Cinema Organ Society (The Buttermarket Shropshire),
Volunteered working on the carriages at the Severn Valley Railway, attended the 1940s
weekends each year, helped to start the campaign to save the Dudley Hippodrome,
attended the GLD line dancing, and even delivered the football pools in his local area, to
name but a few. He did regular visits to the NEC always bringing back pens, notebooks and
memory sticks for everyone. Not forgetting his humorous jokes!
Malcolm always attended Blackpool until his health deteriorated in the last few years. He
was well acquainted with Alan Randall and Frank Formby. He also used to write an article in
the Vellum and sign off as “The Roving Reporter”.
Malcolm always made everyone welcome at his Branch Meetings and was truly loved by all and we will miss him tremendously. The
Stourbridge Branch will always be Malcolm’s, and we hope to do him justice in the future and will continue as he would have wished
promoting George Formby. God Bless Malcolm

1935 - 2021
I have known Malcolm for over 30 years and always found him to be the perfect gentleman. A dedicated Formby lover and whenever
we would meet at the conventions, he would always update me on his battle to keep Dudley Hippodrome going.
Such a sad loss to all who had the pleasure of knowing Malcolm.
On behalf of the GFS committee and members, I offer sincerest condolences to Malcolm’s son, Andrew.
