Llandudno 2023
Victorian Extravaganza

LARGE CROWDS

During the first May bank holiday weekend, members of the George Formby Society entertained large crowds at the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza. The George Formby Society has enjoyed a long-running association with the people of Llandudno thanks in the main to the old North Wales branch which organised the first GFS meeting there in 1997 and followed up with a second meeting in 1998.

HISTORY

The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza was created in 1986 and from the early millennium years, the North Wales branch and then the Westhoughton branch endeavoured to support this event. Now the Llandudno Victorian weekend is a firm fixture in the GFS calendar

GOOD ATTENDANCES

Members of the Society enjoyed playing together throughout the three-day event and it was obvious from the opening numbers that the name and the music of George Formby are still well to the fore in the memories of residents and holidaymakers. Our group attracted good attendances throughout the weekend, at times climbing to the 200 mark and it was quite evident from the start, just how enthusiastic and positive our audience and passersby were. We freely handed out many back issues of The Vellum magazine and GFS flyers and this encouraged the audience to make further enquiries about our Society, where we meet and how to join.

FORMBY STILL STRIKES A CHORD

I was overwhelmed by the response of the enthusiastic audience to the music and memories of George Formby. Though it is over sixty years since George Formby passed away, his music still strikes a chord in the hearts of those old enough to remember him and younger people were also enthused by the atmosphere and the music.

A FINANCIAL SUCCESS

I am delighted to report that the weekend was also a financial success for the GFS with approximately £600 being generated from the sale of GFS Llandudno T-Shirts, GFS pens and the fee paid to us by the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza committee. It was nice to see that some of our players had taken the trouble to dress in Victorian style to suit the theme of the weekend.

BACK IN 2024

As we left the stage for the last time on Monday, I was asked if our Society would return next year. The GFS is always ready and willing to support this annual event and is happy to consider other events and venues with a theme that supports the music and era of George Formby.
