GFS member for 27 years
I was recently made aware of the sad news of the passing of Ken Smith. Ken had
enjoyed membership of the Society for the last twenty-seven years.
Tireless charity worker
He was also a loyal supporter of the Yorkshire Ukulele Circle. A tireless worker for
many charities, he raised thousands of pounds over many years. In 1997 Ken walked
from Liverpool to Leeds, entertaining along the way. He raised £5,000 in the process to
donate to a hospital that had treated him as a child.
Uke development
Ken was always interested in the development of ukuleles and created quite a few in
shapes that were quite avant-garde.
He enjoyed singing songs of a jazz-strain. Also of course, he sang Formby material. In
March 2011 when we did a special “Songs From The Films” concert i joined Ken to
sing “Hitting The High Spots Now” in The Imperial Hotel.
Fairytale film
In 1997, Ken and his Formby-friend Norman Wilcox were selected to play as extras in
the film, "Fairytale - A True Story".
He had been ill for quite some years but never let illness get in the way of his charity
work or his appearances at the Uke Circle.
On behalf of all Ken's pals in the Yorkshire Ukulele Circle and members who knew Ken
in the GFS, I extend sincere condolences to Ken's family.
