25,000 members!
The George Formby Club was formed in June 1937 and carried on throughout the 1940s before
disbanding I believe in 1946. Some of the members of our Society would have been members of
the Fan Club, especially in the early 1960s when the GFS was formed. The last person who I
spoke with on the subject of the fan
club was the late Alf Harper of
London who was a member. He told
me that when the club disbanded,
George Formby put on a free show
at the London Palladium for the
members in 1946. At its height,
membership of the Fan Club was
between 25,000 and 35,000
members’
