eileen bennett - 102
Oldest surviving leading lady
George Formby’s co-star in his 1942 Columbia released “Much Too Shy” film, celebrated her 102nd
birthday on 08 July 2021. She played the character of Jackie Somers in the film.
Her son, Nicholas Hammond contacted the GFS to say that his mum was still active and would love
to visit Blackpool and attend a Society gathering. Unfortunately at the time of the meeting in
September 2018, Eileen could not make the trip but did send a recorded message to be played to
the members.
Eileen’s film career was only brief, she made ten films between 1939 to 1943, not many but she
also starred in theatres in the West End and the USA.
Eileen is easily the longest living leading lady starring in a George Formby film, but it is interesting
to note that almost every one of the leading ladies lived to a good old age. Only Polly Ward failed to
get to her 80s and died in 1987 at the age of 74. Every other lady including Sara Gregory and
Barbara Perry lived to ages ranging between 80 and 97 but Eileen is easily the champion!
So we send Eileen sincere birthday greetings and congratulations on reaching such a wonderful
age.
