George Formby's last recording from 1960 is the theme of giant supermarket chain
Sainsburys latest Christmas advert.
Featuring Jamie Oliver and a cast of colourful characters. Sainsburys have given all
Formby fans the nicest Christmas present they could wish for and this couldn't have
happened at a better time then at the close of our 50th anniversary year by featuring
George singing his last hit "Happy Go Lucky Me' which actually entered the UK Charts
on 21st July 1960 and climbed to no. 40 and stayed in the chart for three weeks
The record was actually a double-sided hit with the other side being Banjo Boy.
Sainsburys is one of the largest supermarket chains in the UK and is sure to feature the
clip all over the Christmas period, giving George and the GFS some wonderful free
publicity.
Whilst George is well known (in the Formby World) for releasing this song, other
recording artists also thought the song must have had potential and I know of two other
recordings of Happy Go Lucky Me that exist, perhaps there are more - if you know of
one then please get in touch.
Paul Evans recorded it in 1958 and Frank Ifield did the same in 1960 - but George
Formby's is the one that has endured.
