SPRING WEATHER

It was in glorious early spring weather that the first GFS convention of 2003 took place on the weekend of March 15/16 in the Circle Foyer room of the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. Not the busiest of weekends with a few empty seats but members come and go throughout the weekend and there is always a good size audience both for the concerts and the cinema presentations. Films showed this weekend were “South American George” and “Get Cracking” together with a clip from BBC TV's “Antique Roadshow” featuring Derrick Pearce and the kimono he owns which was originally the gown used by GF in SAG. The other clip which was received by the members with great interest, was some rare footage of George Formby’s brother Frank singing one of George Formby Snr’s songs (“Standing At The Corner Of The Street”

A FANTASTIC PRESENTATION

We all enjoyed another fantastic presentation from the playing side of the membership with entertainers of all ages taking to the stage. The GFS shop was kept busy for the full weekend providing vital funds to ensure the future prosperity of the Society. Ukulele beginners were well catered for with tuition classes and a concert all of their own in a smaller room with much less pressure to bear for that vital first stage performance. If you are looking for an instrument then the Blackpool conventions are were you’ll find something, a separate room is set up purely for the sale of ukes and there are usually instruments to suit all, from beginner to expert.

ANDY EASTWOOD

The highlight of this weekend for me was the performance of the brilliant Andy Eastwood who is rapidly carving a highly successful career in show business. Andy is usually booked to perform either in the UK or overseas for most weeks of the year but he rarely fails to turn up at the George Formby Society convention. His ukulele technique is marvellous and his complete performance is definitely in the deluxe class.
