NEW MILLENIUM

The first convention of the new millennium occurred on the weekend of 4th and 5th March in the Baronial Room at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. As ever, the meeting was well attended throughout the weekend with members of all ages taking the stage to sing their latest learned songs and to show off to their fellow-members, their ever- improving ukulele prowess.

FILMS

The films over the weekend were two of Formby’s best, on the Saturday “It’s In The Air” was the feature and this was followed on the Sunday by “Feather Your Nest”. Although there are only 20 films to call upon (along with a few documentaries), the members never seem to tire of watching George on the big screen and this weekend was no exception with two well-attended cinema gatherings.

THE SOCIETY SHOP

One of the biggest successes at conventions these days is of course, the Society Shop. This was a ventured that was started around three years ago and has gathered pace until now, the range of items is quite amazing and this weekend the Shop recorded the highest ever turnover. All the profit from the shop goes into Society funds and members can usually rely on a cut-price bargain – so everybody goes home happy. Although numerous members are happy to assist behind the counter, the credit for the present success of the shop lies firmly at the door of Society President, Dennis Taylor and his wife Pat. They manage the venture and somehow manage to keep producing novel items of ‘Formbyiana’ for the benefit of all.

KITTY BARRETT

Other welcome funds are generated by another faithful and tireless worker in Kitty Barrett. Kitty and her team of raffle ticket sellers must have raised thousands of pounds over the years for the Society. Kitty and the team are stalwart and faithful supporters of the GFS.

DENNIS MITCHELL

The highlight of the weekend was of course the honorary membership given to Dennis Mitchell. As usual there was ukulele tuition for beginners, archive material to view and instruments for sale. The next meeting will take place on June 4 & 5th 2000.
